    Distance Multimedia Degree Studies. The Application of Multimedia Technology to Multimedia Studies

    This paper describes the set of courses that make up the distance multimedia degree studies offered by the UPC in conjunction with the UOC. These courses are designed to meet the increasing demand for continued education by integrating the advances in information technologies currently arising from new paradigms in distance learning. The study plan has been specially designed and is fully interdisciplinary. The plan draws on three areas of knowledge: creation and design of the programme content, marketing and management of multimedia production, and computer and communications technology. The educational model seeks a balance between practical activities, similar to those students are likely to undertake in the workplace, and theory−based reading tasks aimed at furthering and consolidating their grasp of the concepts involved. The model is structured around three elements: self−access material, virtual activities, and real activities. The self−access materials and the assessment system give the student continued feedback on their progress. The average age of the students is 32'3 years (range 19−55). Most are men (77%), and 60% are pursuing university studies for the first time. A key element of the distance multimedia studies is the involvement of the teachers in the preparation of the multimedia teaching materials. This role means that they must be trained in materials design and must use models of specific contents.     Prevalence of Symptomatic Axial Osteoarthritis Phenotypes in Spain and Associated Socio-Demographic, Anthropometric, and Lifestyle Variables

Axial osteoarthritis (OA) is a common cause of back and neck pain, however, few studies have examined its prevalence. The aim was to estimate the prevalence and the characteristics of symptomatic axial OA in Spain. Methods. EPISER2016 is a cross-sectional multicenter population-based study of people aged 40 years or older. Subjects were randomly selected using multistage stratified cluster sampling. Participants were contacted by telephone to complete rheumatic disease screening questionnaires. Two phenotypes were analyzed, patients with Non-exclusive axial OA (NEA-OA) and Exclusive axial OA (EA-OA). To calculate the prevalence and its 95% confidence interval (CI), the sample design was considered and weighting was calculated according to age, sex and geographic origin. Results. Prevalence of NEA-OA by clinical or clinical-radiographic criteria was 19.17% (95% CI: 17.82–20.59). The frequency of NEA-OA increased with age (being 3.6 times more likely in patients aged 80 s or more than in those between 40 and 49 years) and body mass index. It was significantly more frequent in women, as well as in the center of Spain. It was less frequent in those with a higher level of education. Lumbar OA was more frequent than cervical OA. This difference grew with increasing age and was not associated with gender. It was also greater in overweight and obese subjects. Conclusions. This is the first study on the prevalence of axial OA phenotypes in Europe describing the associated socio-demographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle variables.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Asemade, dáse conta dos resultados das intervencións en dous xacementos, un de carácter gandeiro que presenta un palimpsesto estrutural e cronolóxico (Río Barbanza), e outro relacionado con sistemas de control territorial (Outeiro da Torre).We review the survey works carried through in the district of Barbanza, now extended to the parishes of Macenda and Bealo in search of livestock / pastoral settlements. In the course of these explorations a Copper Age site was discovered and, nearby, a previously unknown hillfort. An account is given of the results of the digging in two sites; one related to husbandry tasks, that presents a structural and chronological palimpsest (Rio Barbanza); and another more, related to territorial control systems (Outeiro da Torre)

    Evaluación de los efectos de la restauración hidrológico-forestal en la atenuación de los riesgos naturales en las cuencas de montaña: aplicación en el Pirineo aragonés

    Most of the water and forest restoration projects in mountain basins in Spain were carried out over 50 years ago and some were developed over a century ago. These projects were planned and implemented to secure a long term viability of activities in the mountain. They required important investments and caused deep transformations in the environment. Although they met the main objective of inhabiting the mountain, the evolution of society in the second half of the 20th century has not allowed to value their achieve-ments, nor enjoying them. This put at risk the conservation of reforested forests and the maintenance of works in torrents to control floods in torrential events. A methodology based on technic-scientific criteria is shown to analyse the transformation experimented by the mountain throughout the years by those projects, and to estimate the level of protection provided against nat-ural hazards through: 1) the extent of the forest arising from reforestations; 2) the works carried out within the watersheds and their drainage courses, whose functioning is affected by the evolution of reforestations and is taken into account; 3) the synergies arising between reforestations and works along the consolidation of the specific objectives of the projects. The methodolo-gy is applied to the basin of two little torrents in the Aragonese Pyrenees, Arratiecho and Arás, to serve as an example.La gran mayoría de los proyectos de restauración hidrológicoforestal de cuencas de montaña en España se efectuaron hace más de cincuenta años y algunos rebasan el siglo. Son proyectos que se planificaron y ejecutaron para asegurar la viabilidad futura de las actividades en la montaña con un horizonte temporal a largo plazo; exigieron importantes inversiones y causaron profundas transformaciones en el medio. Aunque se alcanzó su principal objetivo, habilitar la montaña, la profunda evolución que ha experimentado la sociedad en el último medio siglo le impide percibir unos logros que inconscientemente disfruta. Esta situación supone un serio riesgo para la conservación del bosque surgido de sus reforestaciones y el mantenimiento de las obras ubicadas en los torrentes para controlar sus crecidas ante aguaceros extraordinarios. Se expone una metodología, basada en criterios científico-técnicos, para analizar la transformación experimentada por la montaña con dichos proyectos en el tiempo y estimar el grado de protección proporcionado por los mismos ante los riesgos naturales mediante: 1) las cubiertas forestales surgidas de las reforestaciones; 2) las obras ejecutadas en sus cauces de drenaje e incluso en sus laderas, cuyo correcto comportamiento está condicionado a la evolución de las reforestaciones, por lo que estas se incluyen en su evaluación, y 3) las sinergias surgidas entre las reforestaciones y las obras de corrección hidráulica a lo largo de la consolidación de los objetivos específicos del proyecto.     Prevalencia de artrosis sintomática en España: Estudio EPISER2016

    Introduction: The Spanish Society of Rheumatology carried out the EPISER2000 study in 2000 to determine the prevalence of osteoarthritis and other rheumatic diseases in the Spanish population. Recent sociodemographic changes and lifestyle habits in Spain justified updating the epidemiological data on osteoarthritis and other rheumatic diseases (EPISER2016-study). Objective: To estimate the prevalence of symptomatic osteoarthritis of the cervical spine, lumbar spine, hip, knee and hand in the adult population in Spain. Material and methods: Cross-sectional population-based study. A multistage and stratified random cluster sampling was carried out. The participants were contacted by telephone to complete an osteoarthritis screening questionnaire. A rheumatologist confirmed or discarded the diagnosis. The ACR-clinical-criteria were used to diagnose hand-osteoarthritis and the ACR-clinical-radiological criteria to diagnose knee- and hip-osteoarthritis. To estimate the prevalence and its 95% confidence interval, weights were calculated according to the probability of selection in each of the sampling stages. Results: The prevalence of osteoarthritis in Spain in one or more of the locations studied was 29.35%. The prevalence of cervical-osteoarthritis was 10.10% and of lumbar-osteoarthritis 15.52%. Both are more frequent in women and at older ages, as well as in people with low levels of education and obesity. The prevalence of hip-osteoarthritis was 5.13%, that of knee-osteoarthritis 13.83%, these are associated with female sex, overweight and obesity. The prevalence of hand osteoarthritis was 7.73%. It is more frequent in women, who are obese, with a low educational level and who are older. Conclusion: The EPISER2016 study is the first to analyse the prevalence of symptomatic osteoarthritis in 5 locations (cervical, lumbar, knee, hip and hands) in Spain.
